FAQ

What is Hypnotherapy / Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural normal state of awareness, which we a human beings enter into every day of our lives whether we realise it or not. You will more than likely be in a trance state when driving your car, watching TV or reading a good book. The term hypnotism was coined by an English physician named James Braid in 1840 and is derived from the Greek word for sleep. However contrary to popular belief it is not a sleep state even though the person in a hypnotic trance may seem to be asleep. Very simply it is a heightened state of awareness. The willing subject relaxes both their body and mind, and allows suggestions to given to the unconscious mind where all values, beliefs and behaviours originate from.

What does Hypnosis feel like?

A hypnotic trance is different for everyone so it is difficult to say what it will feel like for you. Some people feel their senses increase, other just enjoy switching off from the world. It is important to remember that you are in control 100% of the time. All hypnosis is self hypnosis.

Is Hypnosis safe?

Totally. There has never been a reported case of any ill effects of going into trance. As the subject is in control all of the time if a suggestion was to be given by an unethical practitioner then that suggestions will be rejected by the subject and you will emerge from the trance state immediately.

Can I be Hynotised?

Everyone can be hypnotised – as long as they want to be. People often say ‘I am too smart to be hypnotised’. This actually works in the opposite way. The smarter you are and the better imagination you have the easier it is to enter a trance state.

Am I in control or being controlled?

You are in 100% control all of the time. It is a common misconception that the Hypnotherapist has some mystical power over people and puts them in a state of mind control. If we did then there would be much easier ways to make a living! Hypnosis is a consent state. First of all the subject has to be willing to enter a trance. Secondly there has to be a good level of rapport between the hypnotherapist and the subject. Lastly the subject has to be free from fear and trust the hypnotherapist fully. Once in the trance state the Hypnotherapist is a guide, taking you towards the goals that you want to achieve. You can come fully out of the trance state whenever you wish and are aware of all that is going on around you at all times.

How deep into trance will I go?

This all depends on the three points above. The willingness of the subject, and the level of rapport and trust between the subject and the Hypnotherapist. The greater these three elements, the increased likeliness of a deep trance. Another factor to consider is the reason for the hypnosis. Some issues only require a light level of trance.

What will I remember?

You will remember everything unless the Hypnotherapist feels that there are certain things that are better left in your unconscious mind (such as bad memories of abuse or other trauma). Often during a hypnosis session we will cover a lot and you may not remember everything conscious right away. Rest assured that the unconscious mind does remember everything and will allow you to conscious remember of a period of days after the session.

Will I dance like a chicken?

Most people think of this when the term Hypnosis is mentioned. Stage hypnotists use ‘entertainment’ such as this to keep the audience’s attention. They pick out specially selected people who are extroverted and very suggestible. Whilst in a trance state you cannot do anything that contradicts your values and beliefs. This is why Hypnosis is so safe. Hypnosis here at Synergy Within is clinical, and is used only for healing and self improvement. Your welfare is our sole focus and the hypnotic process is used only to help you achieve your goals.
